My Studio

My Studio

1953 - Ginna 4 years Old - Watercolor Painting

My first studios were at my parent’s home where I started painting at age 3. I have always made space for a studio anywhere I have lived for over 65 years of painting.

Now my studio is on the second floor of my home; a 600 square foot space with a sloping ceiling that reaches 11 ft. tall on the north wall - that is lined with tall windows looking out onto the surrounding mountains. The light coming in is expansive and allows me to paint in daylight without lights. But I also have banks of spot lights covering the entire ceiling on 12 separate switches for maximum illumination where or when needed.

There is a tall mirror on a stand with rollers that I use to view my work in reverse when I paint. I can shift the position easily for different situations, as just about everything in the studio is on wheels. The mirror allows one to see objectively and doubles the appearance of distance to the work. Below you can see the 6 ft tall mirror: in one photo it is on the left and the other you see the back of the moveable mirror on the right.

Built-in flat-files hold un-framed works on paper. Also in one corner there are vertical storage bins that extend up to the ceiling. Carts, tables and a few big easels move around all over the studio depending on if I am painting on one of my carved frames, or painting on the easels, or perhaps stretching a canvas, or photographing work and so on.  It’s a pretty fun place to be! – G.P.L.
